Stochastic maintenance models have been developed in the long history of operations research/management science, but have been out of scope of real engineering problems instead of their interesting natures. In this tutorial talk I show that some typical stochastic maintenance models such as a simple age replacement model are applicable to software fault-tolerance techniques. More specifically, I introduce the concept of software againg which can be observed in real operational software systems and a fault management technique, called software rejuvenation. In fact, the software rejuvenation is regarded as one of the most effective low-cost software fault-tolerant techniques based on environment diversity philosophy. I overreview several stochastic models to trigger the rejuvenation from the standpoints of modeling/estimation.
