报告内容摘要:
This study re-examines the per capita electricity-economic growth nexus in the top 10 electricity consuming countries by using quarterly data over the 1960QI to 2016QIV period. We use the novel Quantile-on-Quantile regression (QQ) technique proposed by Sim and Zhou (2015) to study this nexus. We further use the non-parametric causality-in-quantiles procedure proposed by Balcilar et al. (2017) to check the robustness of the results. In particular, we examine the manners in which the quantiles of economic growth per capita affect the quantiles of electricity consumption per capita and vice versa. Our findings show that in the case of the Russia, India, Japan, Canada, Brazil and South Korea, there is a positive and bidirectional causal relationship between economic growth and electricity consumption which validates the feedback hypothesis. However, the feedback hypothesis is also valid in China, USA, Germany and France but has announced disproportions of the directional relations between the growth on electricity consumption and vice versa. Furthermore, the results conclude that the impact of economic growth is also significant for all the lower, middle and upper quantiles of the provisional distribution of electricity consumption and vice versa. These results extend the recent findings on the electricity-growth nexus and imply a differential impact of electricity consumption on economic growth among those ten countries, which guides us in offering some specific policy recommendations on efficiency and conservation to these countries.
