　　The efficiency gains of hospital mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are derived not only from market, financial, and managerial synergies, but also from operational synergies in economies of scale, clinical standardizations, service line optimizations, and so forth. However, relevant research has largely neglected the operational coordination between target and acquirer hospitals that can lead to efficiency improvements. To understand the roles that operations characteristics play in hospital acquisitions, this paper examines the effects of geographic proximity and service overlap on an acquired hospital’s post-acquisition operational performance (i.e., cost and quality). The paper first examines whether the acquisition benefits the acquired hospital in terms of cost and quality. Second, we try to determine the extent to which these benefits can be attributed to similarities in two operational characteristics, namely service lines and geographical location. Analyzing four years (2010-2013) of data from 218 acquired (target) hospitals in the U.S., we find that hospital acquisitions result in lower readmission rates and lower operating expenses for the target hospitals. Further, the degree of geographic proximity is positively related to a target hospital’s post-acquisition quality performance. Moreover, the positive relationship between the degree of service similarity and a target hospital’s post-acquisition quality performance diminishes as the degree of geographic proximity increases.

　　Xiaosong Peng is an Associate Professor in Bauer College of Business, University of Houston. Previously he was assistant professor at Texas A&M University. Dr. Peng completed his doctoral degree in Operations Management from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. Dr. Peng’s other degrees include a master’s degree in information systems management from Carnegie Mellon University, and a bachelor’s degree from Beijing Institute of Technology. 

　　Dr. Peng’s current research interests include operations strategy, global sourcing, and information technology impacts on manufacturing and service operations. Dr. Peng’s research has appeared in Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, Decision Sciences, International Journal of Production Research, among others. He is currently senior editor for Production and Operations Management Journal, and associate editor for Journal of Operations Management, Decision Sciences Journal, and Journal of Supply Chain Management.  Dr. Peng’s recognitions include Decision Science Institute Best Inter-Disciplinary Conference Paper Award, China Ministry of Education Research Award, Journal of Operations Management Associate Editor Service Award, Academy of Management Chan Hahn Best Paper Award Finalist, Juran Center for Leadership in Quality fellowship, among others.
