【Mingli Lecture 2021, Issue 69】Professor Christy M.K. Cheung of Hong Kong Baptist University was invited to give a presentation

On December 21, No. 69 of 2021, Professor Christy M.K. Cheung of Hong Kong Baptist University brought the title "When Socialization Goes Wrong: Collective Trolling on Social Media ". Professor Yan Zhijun of School of Management and Economics of Beijing Institute of Technology introduced Christy and presided over the report.

Christy first introduced what "trolling" is. Unlike Internet bullying, trolling is more purposeful and provocative, and many malicious attacks on social platforms have triggered angry reactions. Teacher Christy wanted to use a socio-technical perspective to understand the intentions of participating in social media trolling. Teacher Christy introduced her research model, which tested the role of social technology in promoting online trolling behavior from the aspects of social anonymity, social technology and social identity. The research results promoted theoretical progress in this field, and at the same time, the research results could provide practical guidance for the owners of social media platforms. Help them develop timely measures to combat trolling.


Teacher Christy's report fully aroused the interest and enthusiasm of the teachers and students. After the report, the teachers and students actively communicated with Teacher Christy and the report was warmly received by the teachers and students.

附:Christy M.K. Cheung老师简介

Christy M.K. Cheung is a Professor in the Department of Finance and Decision Sciences of Hong KongBaptist University. She is the awardee of the Research Grant Council (Hong Kong) Senior ResearchFellow scheme with the funding to advance research into the role of technology in online collective deviant behavior. She earned a Ph.D. in Information Systems from the College of Business at City University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include Technology Use and Well-Being, Social Media,Societal Impact of Technology Use. She has published more than 200 refereed articles in internationaljournals and conference proceedings, including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems and Journal of the Association for Information Systems. Sheserves as the Editor-in-Chief at Internet Research and the President of AIS-Hong Kong Chapter.
