【Mingli Lecture 2023, Issue 37】 Dr. Valerian Pede from the International Rice Research Institute Visits and Provides Academic Sharing

On May 15, 2023, Dr. Valerien Pede, senior scientist of the International Rice Research Institute and head of the Policy and Investment Research Department in the Transition Period, was invited to give an academic report online to teachers and students of the School of Management and Economics of Beijing Institute of Technology

Dr. Pede conducted an academic sharing on "Assessing the benefits of Green Super Rice in Sub Sahara Africa: Evidence from Mozambique" on the promotion of green super rice varieties in Africa. The Green Super Rice Project was officially launched in 2008 and is the largest international agricultural technology poverty alleviation project led by Chinese scientific research institutions and scientists since the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The project has approved 78 varieties in 18 target countries in Asia and Africa. Dr. Pede's research focuses on the adoption of the green super rice variety in Africa, using Mozambique farmer survey data to evaluate the yield and cost-effectiveness benefits of adopting the green super rice variety for African small-scale rice producers. The research results show that adopting green super rice varieties can significantly improve the rice yield and cost efficiency of African farmers who adopt them. Rice varieties represented by green super rice can bring positive changes to the development of rice production in Mozambique.

After the report, Dr. Pede and the participating teachers and students had in-depth discussions on the overseas diffusion of Chinese varieties, technology adoption, and application of measurement methods, as well as the cooperation between China and Africa in agriculture and the international rice industry.
