【Mingli Lecture 2022, Issue 10】3-9 Professor Wan Xiang from The Ohio State University was invited to report

On the evening of March 9th, [Mingli Lecture 2022 Issue 10] was honored to invite Prof. Wan Xiang from Fisher School of Business, The Ohio State University, USA to bring a presentation entitled "Does A Smile to Board Result in A Smile to Get Off? On-Time Flights and Passenger Sentiment After Curb-To-Gate Facial Recognition" academic report.

Mr. Wan Xiang first introduced the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the aviation industry: the impact of facial recognition at airports on flight punctuality and passenger sentiment. Implementing facial recognition at airports has two potential benefits for passengers: saving time and facilitating travel; at the same time, there is some uncertainty about these potential benefits: first, the time savings in document checking may not successfully translate into better on-time performance, and second It is some passengers who may be resistant to the use of personal information by facial recognition technology. Based on this background, Professor Wan draws on specific data from the first implementation of facial recognition in a terminal building in the United States. The results showed that facial recognition reduced flight departure and arrival delays, but not increased early departures or early arrivals. At the same time, the overall passenger mood dropped after face recognition. These findings enhance the understanding of facial recognition and provide guidance for airlines, airport managers and policymakers considering implementing biometric terminals.

Mr. Wan Xiang's wonderful report attracted many teachers and students from domestic and foreign universities. In the report, Mr. Wan kindly answered various questions and hoped to carry out further exchanges with domestic teachers many times. His kind guiding attitude and profound knowledge were highly praised by the participants.
